Memories of Our Grandparents

September 19, 2010, 10:58 pm - Miriam Sheffield

Ann Carter Jensen (Oldest granddaughter of John & Alice Carter)

Memories of John Carter

I remember always going out to grandpa's machine shed and watching him sharpening his tools.  In that shed was a wooden cowboy boot I liked very much, always wishing I could have that boot.  I was always fascinated with the way Grandpa worked with his tools.  Grandpa was always a great example and I loved him very much.

Memories of Alice Carter

Grandma Alice Carter was always full of fun.  She played "My Doggie Won't Bite You" and other games with us.  I always helped her with shelling peas, snapping beans etc. but the most important, was the talks we had together.  I loved her homemade bread and rolls. Grandma was a wonder and great example to me.  I loved giving her permanents and doing her hair.  I loved sleeping over at night.  Her singing was great.

Memories of John & Alice Carter

I remember staying over at Grandma & Grandpa Carter's as a young girl.  It was always fun spending time with them.  I remember how LARGE breakfast always was-mush, toast & jam, eggs, bacon.. it seems I was still full when lunch came around-fresh homemade bread, cheese, meat, more jam and butter, soup... It seems all Grandma did was wear an apron and cook-but her home was always clean and smelled delicious.  I remember when they moved from their home by Weber state to a home in our ward.  It was wonderful to ride my bike or walk to their home a lot! I remember Grandma being thrilled to have a basement.  She said when she needed to clean she could could just open the basement door and throw everything down there.  But her basement stayed clean and tidy as well... I guess she decided not to just throw everything downstairs.  It was fun playing with cousins in her yard or basement.  We always found fun things to do or talk about. We looked at Grandma's books or smelled geraniums dormant in the basement waiting for spring planting.

Hot Rolls

Camping in Monte Cristo

How after my divorce, Grandma and Grandpa had me over for dinner. They just loved me, fed me, no questions-they were just there for me. It meant so much to me.

We had fun at Christmas and at sleepovers

A chore I did with Grandma was thingking I was helping Grandma make bread.

A tradition I remember was Christmas.

Memories of John & Alice Carter

I remember picking strawberries with Grandma Alice in their garden.  I remember her wonderful homemade rolls that were served at all family gatherings.  I loved the many family reunion/gatherings in their little house, where love radiated everywhere.  As children we loved playing hide and seek inside and out of their home.

I loved watching Grandpa in his workshop and loved hit hot house.  We loved the little surprises under the Christmas tree every year for ALL of us.  They were wonderful, loving grandparents.

Memories of John & Alice Carter

I spent alot of one on one time with Grandma and Grandpa. Some when I was in college and they lived across the street from campus.  I went over for lunch quite often adn we spent lots of time talking.  Grandma spent alot of time teaching me to crochet (not and easy task!)

One year a lot of us went to Yellowstone.  We had some great fun-I remember picnics in the park.  Grandma liked to help us watch the chipmunks.  grandpa told us some good campfire stories.  The thing I remember most is walking around some hot pools at Old Faithful.  There were some nuns coming the other way on the walkway.  Grandma said, " Here come the zeroes!"I remember being shocked because I'd never heard her say anything except positive things.

I remember the day I got baptised, my mom had to work, so Grandma Carter was with me to help me dress and to change after.  The following day Grandpa Carter confirmed me during Sacrament meeting.  I'm so grateful for their wonderful example and being there when I needed them.  It made my day even more special.

It was always fun at Halloween to trick or treat at Grandpa & grandma Carter's house.  I remember popcorn balls and graham crackers with chocolate frosting as a special treat.I remember Grandma Carter always used the orignal scent Jergens lotion.  Everytime I smell it I think of her.  I loved to go to Grandpa and Grandma's house at Christmas time.  We would visit, sing songs and Grandma would have her boiled raisin cake with carmel frosting and Hawaiian punch.  One of my most treasured possessions is a Christmas card mounted on a piece of wood that Grandpa gave me and Charles the 1st Christmas we were married.

Memories of John & Alice Carter

My favorite memory of my grandparents was going to their home once a week to help them when they were elderly and in failing health.  One day Grandpa asked me to read to him.  His eyesight wasn't very good then. I remember him sitting in his recliner in their little TV room.  Grandma sat next to me.  He asked me to read to him from the Book of Mormon. I read to him the Book of Enos. It speaks of Enos desiring the gospel to be brought to the Lamanites. I thought of how Grandpa and Grandma fulfilled that prophecy as they faithfully served missions to the Indian.  I always think of my Grandpa whenever I read Enos.

The fact that we still get together as the John & Alice carter family is a special tribute to our grandparents.  tehy exemplified love of family.  Visiting with Grandma and granpa on Sunday evening is always a fond memory of being with Grandma and Grandpa.  Hearing them tell of life experiences and mission stories from the reservation (Navajo).  Both Grandma and Grandpa had a wonderful sense of humor and being with them was just "fun".!  I loved Grandma's chocolate chip cookies because she made them with semi-sweet chocolate chips.  The special gift they gave all of us is each other and the associations we now share.  Their memory has now become one of our prized treasures!

I remember Grandma Alice Carter's homemade bread and cookies.  Her house always smelled of home cooking.  It was always full of love.  I think of Grandma when I look at pansies.  She taught me to see their little "faces."  She also made princesses out of the blossoms of hollyhocks for me.  Grandpa let me feed the lambs from bottles of milk.  We helped Grandpa gently pick his strawberries.  I remember family reunions in Grandpa & Grandma's lovely yard and listening to them tell about their childhood and their grandparents.

Memories of Grandpa Dick and Grandma Grace Carter

I remember staying at my Grandma dn Grandpa Carter's house as a young child.  In the mornings, I and my grandma would sit in front of the heater vent to warm up, and that vent would get very hot.  Then they would always make us breakfast, usually eggs, pancakes adn orange juice.  Christmas time was also my favorite time to go to their house.  They would have a tree in the basement and candy on the table.

Memories of Everett Carter

Whenever Everett met someone new, the first thing that he would ask was "Who is your dad?". From this question Everett would find out if they had some family member that he knew to talk about.  This would provide something in common to talk about and to find out how their family was doing.

Ferrel E. Carter Family - Sept. 2008

November 16, 2008, 4:10 pm - James Farrer

It was a great blessing to be one of the children born to John F. and Alice Carter. I cherish their profound influence for good upon their children and grandchildren. I honor their names. I am grateful for exemplary brothers and sisters whom I love.

My call to serve in the Northern States mission from 1937 to 1939 was an great blessing. It proved to be a learning experience for me. My faith and testimony of the prophet Joseph Smith, and the Lord Jesus Christ was firmly embedded in my life. I saw lives changed and families blessed as they responded to the message God's Plan of Happiness.

I served for a time in Cincinnati, Ohio. The day I was departing Ohio to make my way to Southern Indiana, a couple of sister missionaries arrived in Cincinnati. One of them was Myrtle Winger. Later she was called to serve in the Mission office in Chicago. Not long after my release in February of 1939, I once again met Myrtle, from Driggs, Idaho, at a missionary re-union in Salt Lake. We started dating, and on April 10th 1940 were married in the Salt Lake Temple. Not long after we settled in Eugene, Oregon where our firs child, linda, was born. We were able to build a small home in Springfield, across the river from Eugene. On Dec 7th the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. We returned to Ogden, and I was employed at Hill Field.

We were blessed with five more children, Bruce, Robert, Diane, Judy, and Kent. Today my posterity includes 23 grandchildren, and 45 great-grandchildren. After the War I was able to develop my own business as a Wholesale Distributor of Electronic Parts and Equipment, Cater Supply Co. After 40 years, I retired, and sold the business. By that time we had sold the home we built on Tyler Avenue to Weber College, and moved to our present home on Country Hills Drive.

It has been a joy and challenge to serve as a Bishop twice, and to serve in a Stake Presidency twice. In 1973 I was ordained a Patriarch, and serve in that calling today. In 1982 I was set apart and given the Sealing power, by Pres. Gordon B. Hinckley and served in the Ogden Temple as a Sealer for 26 year. For 11 of those years I was the Co-ordinator of the Sealing Dept. with Ila Jean serving as secretary. We were released Aug 15, 2008. It was been a marvelous experience. I have been honored to perform temple marriages, & also give Pat. blessings, for a number of my grandchildren.

Myrtle suffered from asthma, and in her later years had to use a nebulizer to inhale medication. I had an early morning assignment in the temple on June 8th 1985. When I returned home later that morning I found Myrtle had passed away. It was a great shock and a time of much sorrow for me and my children. I was very lonely. Some months later I went to my good friend LaMar Buckner and sought his counsel. After visiting a while he said, "Ferrel, you need to start dating. I suggest you look for someone 13 years younger than you." I did start to date. The third person I dated was Ila Jean. I had know Ila Jean before. She and her husband lived in the 34th Ward when I was the Bishop. I stood in the circle when her husband Bert Corkey blessed their first child, Pam.

We stared dating, enjoyed each others company, and on June 14, 1986 were married for time only in the Ogden Temple. It has been a good marriage, and she is 13 years younger than I am. We have had a happy relationship, and her four daughters, Pam, Denese, Jolene, and DeeAnn and their families are very compatible with mine. It has been a blessing in my life, and keeps me young.

Roger & Julie (Law) Brunker Family

November 16, 2008, 3:52 pm - James Farrer

I (Julie) am the daughter of John and Carol Carter Law, John and Alice Carter's youngest child. My family consists of my husband Roger Brunker and my son James Dugan Brunker.

Roger and I met in 1982 while we were both working for Weber County. He worked for the County Treasurer and I was preparing to graduate from WEber State and working part time for the County Recorder. At the time I was giving  private flute lessons and Roger thought it would be fun to learn to play the flute. We made an arrangement that I would give him a lesson and he would take me to dinner. A fair trade for a single, college student trying to make it on her own. Needless to say, he was a terrible student. He didn't want to "learn" to play the flute, he just wanted to "play" it. Even though the lessons failed, we developed a great friendship. Roger plays the piano quite well (by ear), so we had a lot of fun that way - me on flute, him on piano. After five years of being best friends we took our relationship to the next step. We were married on September 10, 1987 in the ogden Temple.

We made our first home in Ogden. We both continued to work for the county. I continued giving flute lessons, Roger enjoyed his free time doing musical theater. We both served in our ward in various callings that helped us grow spiritually.

We built a home in roy in 1990. Then, in May of 1992 our lives changed forever. Our son Dugan was born. We feel very blessed and fortunate to have him in our lives, as he is our only child. Being a parent is the greatest job in the world.

Roger is in his 26th year with Weber County. He now works as Chief Deputy Clerk/Auditor, as well as county Tax Coordinator. He is our Stake Activities Chairman. He continues to love musical theater and just completed a production with the Clearfield Community Theater. He has a real knack for directing. He also enjoys long bike rides.

I retired from WEber County 5 years ago. I've worked a few hours a week at our local elementary school teaching art and music. I also do some volunteer tutoring a couple of times a week. I am currently serving in the Stake Young Women's Presidency. I enjoy card making, cooking and reading.

Dugan is a junior at Roy High. He just turned 16 in May, being ordained a Priest and getting his drivers license. He is serving as 2nd Assistant to the Bishop. He loves to sing and has a great voice. He sings in the Chamber and Royal Choirs at school as well Choral Edition ( a performing group). He is very out going and has a lot of friends. He loves soccer and plays o a state competition team, and hopes to play his 3rd year on the high school team in the spring. His favorite place in the whole world is Disneyland, (except maybe for EFY at BYU).

As a family we enjoy soccer. Roger and I never tire of watching, Dugan hasn't tired of playing yet. We also enjoy being with family and friends, playing board games, attending music and theater productions and traveling.

Who Are We? Becky Slaydon Wilford Family

November 16, 2008, 3:34 pm - James Farrer

I, (Becky Slaydon), Almina Carter & Jim Slaydon's daughter, have lived in Alpine, Utah for the past 21 years.......NO, not one of the huge Alpine mansions everyone hears about in Alpine...I live in a VERY small, humble pioneer house (100 yr old) in the center of town. I completed my BS Degree in Geology (BYU) many years ago, but I work with seniors as an Activities Director, as a profession. I raise Alpacas and I hand spin and weave their luxurious fiber (as well as other fibers ...wool, flax, cotton, etc.). I have been a single mom (for about 20 years), of 4 wonderful children. They are all grown up and making their way in the world as follows:

Kara (27 yrs old) is married to Ben Allen and they live in Eagle Mountain. They have 2 darling boys (11 mo. apart)...my only Grandchildren....Kaden, age 2, and Gavin, age 1. What a joy....these grandkids!

Erin (25 yrs old) is a senior at BYU. She returned last year from a mission to Argentina and she lives in Orem.

Carter (23 yrs old) returned last year from a mission to Georgia. He has been working and attending College. He lives in Alpine with some friends. He loves to hunt and is a General Falconer.

Kimberlee (22 yrs old) still lives with Mom in Alpine and is in her last half of training as a cosmetologist. She attends Paul Mitchell school in Provo.
